Do 11th and 12th standard studies form the base for commerce students

Basic concepts for subjects like accountancy , economics , organisation of commerce and corporate law are important for the students. During my teaching tenure spanning almost 12 years now , I have met students who are pursuing higher education but sometimes do not have a clear understanding of the basic concepts. This creates hindrances in their educational ambitions as well as professional careers.

A building will collapse if the base is not strong. Same happens to be true for the basic foundation of these subjects. When you start working , in your professional career , you will see a substantial difference if your academic base is strong.

For science stream students , they have learnt basics of physics , chemistry , maths or biology when they enter into eleventh standard. But for commerce stream students , most of them learn words like debit and credit , assets , liabilities , GDP , GNP for the very first time. The syllabus for commerce stream is so nicely designed that a student grasps the concepts during these two years with manageable pace.

These two years students should focus on

  1. Understanding each and every concept with clarity
  2. Watching movies made on the concepts related to finance : Please refer to my blog….http://aseemadk.blogspot.com/2017/03/ten-most-watch-movies-for-learning-some.html
  3. Reading books related to finance : You can start with - The Psychology of Money By Morgan Housel or to understand how organisations can work better please do read How Stella saved the farm By Vijay Govindarajan and Chris Trimble
  4. Reading business news - either through economic times or business standard
  5. Group discussion with peers on current topics of finance : You may understand less as of now , but going forward it will help you to grasp concepts and bridge the gap between academia versus the practical side of it

Students can focus on strengthening their concepts and start studying simultaneously for professional exams as well.

The way Krishna Professional Coaching can help you :

  1. Monday to Friday : Classes in a hybrid mode. Students have a choice between offline and online depending upon place of residence and the way you understand better
  2. Saturday : Regular exams / evaluations
  3. Faculty : Student Ratio is restricted to 1: 5 for every class
  4. Early morning slots from 6 am to 8 am : This helps students to plan their day activities better

Krishna Professional Coaching also coaches for professional exams like CA and you can reach out to us for more details.

Ten must watch movies for learning some management lessons

1. Inside Job - Starring Matt Demon - This is a perfect made movie to understand the subprime mortgage crisis.

2. Wall Street 1 and 2 - No better movie to explain that stock investing needs prudence and Greed is dangerous.

3. Up in the Air - Starring my all time favourite actor , George Clooney , it depicts the HR consultancy angle during recessionary times.

4. Pursuit of Happyness (the y is purposeful (i know my spellings right :) , see the movie to understand the reason)- Again my all time favourite actor Will Smith , playing the role of Chris Gardner who went to built his own investment firm in the future. This movie shows the working of an investment firm Dean Witter and Chris Gardner's struggle as a father to a young boy , struggling through the the harsh reality of the world.

5. Money Ball - My PhD area focuses on something similar called predictive analytics. Again based on a true story it showcases Brad Pitt as the coach who uses a predictive analytic technique of a Stanford graduate for winning a baseball game.

6. Invictus - A biographic starring Morgan Freeman , one of the best actors I have seen and respected for his acting skills , plays the character of Nelson Mandela and shows how a national leader motivates the Rugby team through its Captain.

7. Confessions of a Shopaholic - Based on a novel written by Sophie Kinsella , this fiction movie shows the concept of savings and its importance especially in a world where credit based buying has become a 'trend'.

8. Social Network - A biographic on the then Harvard Student and today's Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg showcases the fact that it is not easy to achieve success and more difficult to retain its charm.

9. Intern - Starring one of my favourite actor , Anne Hathway , this movie showcases the working of a start - up company. Concept of Venture Capital can be understood very nicely through the same.

10. Jobs - Starring Ashton Kutcher , a movie that shows the story of a college dropout , to launching a successful company , being asked to leave one's dream by asking him to leave a company he had built and making a comeback. A movie that is a must watch for someone who dreams big.

Happy Watching !!

CA Results : Five Pointers - The Did You Do It ? Check

A five pointer check for some introspection of the result -

1.  Did you read the module provided by the Institute ?

Most of the students rely on notes provided and popular books which is not wrong. But the correct approach is to read the module compiled by the Institute first. Many students find it tedious , but then CA exams itself are gruelling in nature so why not take some extra efforts to understand the module. The module is written exceptionally well and completes the whole syllabus in the most logical way without any shortcuts. The approach should be - Module provided by ICAI , Practice manual provided by ICAI , all previous year papers including RTPs and then problems given in books or notes provided.

2.  Did you cover the entire syllabus ?

The best part of appearing for a CA exam is forget weightage given to each chapter. Once you become a CA and the client asks you a question , you cannot say that I had put it for option during my exam. CA exams help you to become a true professional. Study the complete syllabus in depth.

3. Did you try applying the theory you learnt practically?

Many students complain that we did not get the relevant exposure. But reading current financial news , annual report of companies (supposedly the best way to understand accounting standards) , listening to speakers who are stalwarts on the subject is also an ideal way to gain exposure which need not be provided by an outsider. (During my teaching tenure I have seen many students clueless about concepts like Other Comprehensive Income or Non -Controlling Interest though they have studied Advanced Accounting. The various resources mentioned above will give you the required edge.)

4.  Did you attempt all the questions in the paper ?

A student should try and attempt all the questions in the paper. The other questions help to overcome a badly attempted question from the view point of the examiner as opposed to the students view point of a very good attempt done. A small error can also get magnified if the basic understanding of a question was wrong. So it is better to attempt all the questions so that chances of such situations can be balanced.

5. Did you discuss the earlier paper with peers when you had exam on the next day ?

In a CA exam , discussing the answers after the paper can be detrimental for the next day's paper. Reason being that you have given your best shot and then discussing the paper is simply demoralising you for the next day's paper. Also the difficulty level for CA exam questions is bound to be more and chances are that at some places you might have gone wrong. But then your approach to the problem might be correct helping you to score marks. By discussing it with peers, who also have only attempted it , you cannot be sure that their answers are correct.

I would like to end the five pointer list with a powerful quote - "If a man empties his purse into his head , no man can take it away from him. An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest" Benjamin Franklin.
